Raj K. Narayan, MD

Dr. Raj K. Narayan oversees all neurosurgery programs within the North Shore-LIJ Health System, including 10 full-time surgeons and more than 30 voluntary surgeons at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center. As director of the Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience, he is also responsible for the Chiari Institute.

A diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Dr. Narayan's professional affiliations include membership in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, The Society of Neurological Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons. He is currently chairman of the American Brain Injury Consortium.

His research interests include head injury and brain tumors. He has published more than 100 papers and over 50 book chapters, as well as co-edited a noted textbook, Neurotrauma. He also helped develop the Traumatic Brain Injury Management Guidelines.

He has held more than 60 visiting professorships and honored lectureships in several countries. He is a recipient of the Brain Injury Association's William Fields Caveness Award given in recognition of contributions to the field of neurosurgery. In addition, he has been listed in Best Doctors in America.

Dr. Narayan received his medical degree from Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA, and a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD.
