The Preliminary Accreditation Process
Hofstra University and the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced a unique and historic agreement to establish a new medical school on Hofstra's campus in Hempstead, New York.
Unlike many traditional programs in which the education of health professionals is carried out in "siloed" academic units, we plan to integrate our medical education into a comprehensive program that is patient-centered, scientifically rigorous, dedicated to fostering discovery, and focused on the healthcare needs of the surrounding community. The proposed school would also be involved in population-based research, emphasizing community-based medicine and the disparities of health, disease and services in the region – fundamental issues for every large, multicultural community. The Medical School will also partner with the Feinstein Institute to offer cutting-edge science education and research opportunities to the students.
The Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University will be the first allopathic (MD) medical school in Nassau County - and the first on Long Island in more than 35 years. The School of Medicine received preliminary accreditation with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and requisite New York State approval. The LCME accredits all Medical Schools in the United States and Canada. It requires self-study and the planning of the entire school to obtain preliminary accreditation.
In late 2008, and through the first half of 2009, five subcommittees have been meeting to produce a working plan to create this new and innovative School of Medicine. The five subcommittees are:
