Dr. Thomas Kwiatkowski received his medical education at the Wayne State University School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and served as its chair in his senior year. He then completed an Internal Medicine residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City. Following completion of his residency he accepted a faculty position in Emergency Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. During his tenure at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Dr. Kwiatkowski participated in the development of the Emergency Medicine residency, the combined Emergency Medicine-Internal Medicine residency as well as several fellowship programs. He served as Chairman of the Department through 2008 when he accepted his current position as Medical Director of the Patient Safety Institute of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. The institute includes a state of the art simulation center and standardized patient center and conducts numerous teaching activities for physicians, nurses, paramedics and other health care professionals. The Patient Safety Institute will also be an important teaching facility for the School of Medicine.

As a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Kwiatkowski has been active in numerous teaching and administrative activities. In addition, he has devoted a significant part of his career to the study of acute ischemic stroke and has been the recipient of several NIH grants. Due to his special interest in improving stroke care and public awareness of stroke, he has served on numerous committees including those sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association and the New York State Stroke Advisory Group.

He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the American Board of Internal Medicine, and a fellow of several organizations including the American Heart Association, the National Stroke Council, the American College of Emergency Physicians and the New York Academy of Medicine.
