Refreshments will be served.

The 2nd session of Narrative Rounds: Promoting Humanism in Healthcare will be held on April 6, 2011, at 5:30pm in the North Shore University Hospital Rust Auditorium.  Ronald Pies, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and lecturer on bioethics and humanities at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine, will be speaking about expressive writing for healthcare professionals.

Narrative Rounds is a method through which the discipline of “Narrative Medicine” is being introduced into the North Shore-LIJ Health System.  Narrative Medicine is an emerging interdisciplinary field at the crossroads of medicine, the arts and the sciences.  Narrative Medicine utilizes writing, art and other creative practices to enable members of the healthcare team to process information about self, patients and colleagues, with an eye towards more intelligent and compassionate medical practice.

Narrative Medicine will play an integral role in the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine curriculum. By bringing Narrative Rounds to our greater Health System, we will provide a supportive environment for the narrative-focused work of our medical trainees, while at the same time fostering humanism throughout the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Our aim is to assure that Narrative Rounds is accessible to as many professionals as possible.

Narrative Rounds promises to be an exciting platform for interdisciplinary conversation and personal reflection.  We look forward to your support and participation.  We also welcome ideas for future speakers.

*Mark your calendar! The third session of Narrative Rounds: Promoting Humanism in Healthcare will be held in Wednesday, September 14th at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. Further details will be forthcoming.
