HOFSTRA NORTHWELL SCHOOL OF MEDICINE SECOND RESIDENCY 'MATCH DAY'
Fifty-nine fourth-year students of the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine (formerly Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine) will learn where they’ll spend the next phase of their medical training on Match Day, Friday, March 18, a traditional rite of passage for medical students.
Match Day occurs on the third Friday of March each year. On that day, starting at 12:00 PM ET, graduating students at medical schools across the United States open a personalized letter from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), revealing residency results. In 2015, the School of Medicine’s first graduating class celebrated 100% placement in the largest ever National Match Day, with more than 41,000 applicants vying for just 30,212 spots. This year’s Match is expected to be even greater.
During this event, there will be opportunities for video and still photography of students opening their Match letters, as well as for interviews with students and administrators.
Among the Hofstra Northwell Match Day prospects are several students who have entered the NRMP’s “couples match” and seeking to secure residencies together at the same institution or region, as well as a 45-year-old career changer and single dad who is close to realizing his dream of becoming a physician. Other Match Day hopefuls include four students who spent part of their fourth-year rotation of studies in Uganda. Out of this adventurous group, one student still remains abroad and has chosen to give her family the honor of opening her long-awaited residency results.
