Application Process

Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University participates in the centralized American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). You can obtain an application via the web at: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/start.htm. AMCAS can also be reached by e-mail at amcas@aamc.org or by telephone at (202) 282-0600.

Only one set of transcripts needs to be submitted. AMCAS will coordinate the verification and distribution of your application to the medical schools to which you are applying. It is not necessary to send official or unofficial transcripts directly to the School of Medicine.

After applying through AMCAS, you will be notified via email of the School's receipt of a verified application. Please verify that your email security settings allow emails from medicine.admissions@hofstra.edu.

Although competitive applicants should have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and MCAT score of 25, non-traditional applicants with extraordinary undergraduate or post-graduate experience, especially in a scientific and/or clinical setting, may request a supplemental application by clicking on the following link and completing the form.

Request a supplemental application

We will not issue a supplemental application until we have received a verified AMCAS application with MCAT scores and a committee evaluation or three letters of recommendation. Upon submitting your request, please allow up to two weeks to receive the supplemental application via email. Please note that our the average MCAT score in our current first year class is 33, and our average cumulative undergraduate GPA is 3.56.

Your application to the School of Medicine will not be considered complete until both applications are received.

Application materials include:

  • A complete AMCAS Application, including: Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores not older than three years at the time of application and official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended.
  • A premedical committee report. If your school does not have a premedical committee, you may submit three individual letters of recommendation: two letters from individual professors (at least one in science) and one letter from a non-academic (included with the AMCAS application). Applicants may submit more than three letters of recommendation, but it is highly recommended that additional letters be submitted through AMCAS.
  • A completed Supplemental Application.
  • A $100.00 supplemental application fee. If you are eligible for fee assistance through the Association of American Medical Colleges Fee Assistance Program (AAMC FAP) you may request a waiver of the School's application fee by selecting Fee Waiver as the payment option when submitting the supplemental application.

The deadline to submit your supplemental application is December 31, 2012. Extensions will not be granted.

After applicants have submitted their AMCAS and supplemental applications, their application will be reviewed. This process can take from two to twelve weeks. Applicants who are invited to interview will be notified via email. Applicants may check the status of their completed application by logging into the Hostra Portal.
