Application Process
Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine participates in AMCAS. You can obtain an application via the web at: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/start.htm. AMCAS can also be reached by e-mail at amcas@aamc.org or by telephone at (202) 282-0600.
Only one set of transcripts needs to be submitted to AMCAS, who will coordinate the verification and distribution of your application to the medical schools to which you are applying. Please do not send official or unofficial transcripts directly to the School of Medicine.
After applying through AMCAS, you will be notified via email of the School's receipt of a verified application. Please verify that your email security settings allow emails from medicine.admissions@hofstra.edu.
Application materials include:
· A complete AMCAS Application, including: Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores not older than three years at the time of application and official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended.
· A premedical committee report. If your school does not have a premedical committee, you may submit three individual letters of recommendation: two letters from individual professors (at least one in science) and one letter from a non-academic (included with the AMCAS application). Applicants may submit more than three letters of recommendation, but it is highly recommended that additional letters be submitted through AMCAS.
· A completed Supplemental Application.
· A $100.00 supplemental application fee. If you are eligible for fee assistance through the Association of American Medical Colleges Fee Assistance Program (AAMC FAP), your supplemental application fee will be waived.
After applicants have their submitted supplemental application and three letters or a committee packet, their application will be reviewed. We review applications from September through January. Interview invites will be sent through January. Other status updates will be sent throughout the application season. No status updates will be given over the phone.
Supplemental Application
Although competitive applicants should have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and MCAT score of 25, non-traditional applicants with extraordinary undergraduate or post-graduate experience, especially in a scientific and/or clinical setting, may request a supplemental application by clicking on the following link and completing the form.
Request a supplemental application
We will not issue a supplemental application until we have received a verified AMCAS application with MCAT scores and a committee evaluation or three letters of recommendation. Upon submitting your request, please allow up to two weeks to receive the supplemental application via email. Please note that our the average MCAT score is 33, and our average cumulative undergraduate GPA is 3.56.
The deadline to submit your supplemental application is December 31, 2013. Extensions will not be granted. It is your responsibility to request the supplemental application if you have not received one.

I have a new letter of recommendation. How should I send it?
Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine accepts letters of recommendation sent via AMCAS Letter Service, VirtualEvals or Interfolio. Letters may also be mailed directly to the following address:

May I submit more than the required amount of letters?
We require a minimum of three individual letters of recommendation or a committee packet. You are welcome to submit additional letters beyond the minimum requirement.

How can I send updates to my application?
You may upload any updates to the School of Medicine Portal. Please do not email a duplicate updates to the email account. Updates are not necessary. The upload tool is there for you to use as much as you prefer. Examples of updates include new grades, employment, publications, etc. Your updates will be stored in your application but will not trigger a rereview of your application. Applications are reviewed between September and January, and applicants may be put on “hold” and reread at a later time.

What is the purpose of the last "Additional Information" essay question on the supplemental application?
This question is for you to add any other information you wish to bring to our attention. You may write anything you like.

May I make changes to my application once it has been submitted?
If you noticed a mistake in your supplemental application, you can email us a summary of the mistake, and we will include that information in your application.

How can I be sure you received my letters of recommendation?
The admissions office electronically tracks all recommendations that are sent to Hofstra on your behalf, and you will be able to check for yourself via our online status-check page.

How can I print my supplemental application?
Log in to the School of Medicine Portal. Click the link to display your completed application. You can then print your application by using your browser's print function.

Where can I find my status report?
Go to https://apply.medicine.hofstra.edu and log in. Click on the "Status" tab to view your status report. You can print it by using your browser's print function.

How will I know when my application is complete?
You will receive an email indicating that your application is complete and in review.

When will I know if I am invited for an interview?
Invitations to interview are extended between August and February. They are sent by email, so we urge you to keep your email address up to date with AMCAS.
