Selection Criteria

Selection criteria include academic credentials; personal traits, including character, motivation, capacity for work experiences in the health sciences, human services, or community; career objectives; and the individual's ability to make a positive contribution to society, the profession, the discipline and the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.

Specifically, the Admissions Committee at the School of Medicine will consider, among other criteria:

  • Undergraduate and graduate academic performance and GPA
  • Rigor of undergraduate study, including the university and academic major
  • Honors and awards
  • MCAT scores
  • Extracurricular activities, including community service, leadership roles and unique accomplishments
  • Capacity to contribute diversity to the educational environment
  • Employment and research experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to a future career in medicine
  • Personal statement describing his or her personal, educational and social backgrounds, and response of the applicant to personal challenges
  • Character traits, including honesty, integrity, leadership, team work, empathy, maturity, emotional stability, creativity and self-direction
  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Perseverance through adversity

It is in the best interest of the community, as well as the educational environment of the School of Medicine, for the Admissions Committee to strive to select a class whose members represent a broad range of diverse experiences, backgrounds and interests. This diversity may include but is not limited to:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnic and racial background
  • Socioeconomic background
  • Educational background
  • Professional background
  • Geographic background
  • Status as first generation college student
  • Interest in different medical specialties
  • Interest in working with underserved populations of patients

The selection criteria used by the Admissions Committee will be determined by the philosophy and the mission of the School of Medicine.  The School of Medicine utilizes a rolling admissions process.  Offers of admission are typically extended later in November through July; however, this is subject to change.

Once an applicant is accepted, he or she will be notified via email, postal mail and on the Hofstra Portal. To secure a seat in the class, applicants must submit a $100 deposit and accept our online Terms and Conditions. The deposit will be applied to the first-year tuition and will be refundable until April 30th. Matriculation will become official only after the student has completed admission requirements, has met the technical standards for admission, and has proven to be drug-free through examination by the Northwell Employee Health Services.
