Selection Criteria

In addition to the criteria required for MD applicants, MD/PhD selection criteria include academic credentials; character traits; experiences in the health sciences, human services, or community; career objectives; their commitment to and suitability for the dual degree program; and the ability to make a positive contribution to society, the profession, the discipline and the School.

Specifically, the Admissions Committee will consider, among other criteria:

  • Personal statement describing the applicant's personal, educational and social backgrounds, and their response to personal challenges
  • Character traits including honesty, integrity, leadership, team work, empathy, maturity, emotional stability, creativity and self-direction
  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Undergraduate and graduate academic performance and GPA, as well as the rigor of undergraduate study, including the university and academic major
  • Honors and awards
  • MCAT scores
  • Extracurricular activities including community service, leadership roles, and unique accomplishments
  • Employment and research experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to a future career in medicine
  • Motivation for the MD/PhD dual degree program

It is in the best interest of the community, as well as the educational environment of the School of Medicine, for the Committee to strive to select a class whose members represent a broad range of diverse experiences, backgrounds, and interests, which may include but is not limited to:

  • Ethnic and racial background
  • Socio-economic background
  • Educational background
  • Professional background
  • Family background
  • Geographic background
  • Interests in different medical specialties
  • Interests in working with underserved populations of patients
