Andrew Sama, MD
Andrew Sama, MD currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center as well as the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Huntington Hospital. He is also the Senior Vice President of Emergency Services for the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System.
In 1977, he completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University, earning a B.A. in Molecular Biology. In 1981, he graduated from Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Sama completed his residency training in medicine at North Shore University Hospital in 1984 as Assistant Chief Resident. Since then, he has worked as an Attending Physician in the Department of Medicine, Department of Surgery, and the Department of Emergency Medicine at North Shore University Hospital. He is currently certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (1984-Present; Diplomate), American Board of Emergency Medicine (1989-Present; Diplomate), and Pediatric Emergency Medicine (1996-Present; Diplomate).
He has held several academic appointments, initially with Cornell University Medical College dating from 1982 through 1996, and subsequently with New York University School of Medicine. Since 2006, Dr. Sama has held the post as the Dorothy and Jack Kupferberg Endowed Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medicine from the New York University School of Medicine.
In addition to his teaching experience, Dr. Sama has played an integral role in the development of Emergency Medicine on both the state and national arenas. Dr. Sama served as President for the New York State Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) from 2002-2004 and has chaired the Bylaws Committee and the Education Committee as well as numerous clinical and practice-management educational sessions. He was named “Physician of the Year” by NY ACEP in 2006. Nationally, he has represented ACEP as a member of the Reimbursement Committee, National Steering Committee, and Quality and Performance Committee. Dr. Sama chaired the National ACEP Bylaws Committee from 2002-2004 and in October 2007, was appointed to the Board of Directors of National ACEP, and most recently, secretary-treasurer for National ACEP.
Dr. Sama has a strong interest in both basic science and clinical research. As Chairman, he oversees the Department of Emergency Medicine’s Clinical and Basic Science Research Program at North Shore University Hospital. His research interests include sepsis/septic shock, myocardial ischemia/infarction and cerebral ischemia/infarction.
