News and Information
The Faculty Council of the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine instituted multiple activities during the 2015-2016 academic year. These activities were developed by the Faculty Council to foster promotions, mentoring, research, and educational opportunities at the SOM for faculty and students.
Specific projects directed to the faculty included the Annual Faculty Professional Activity Report (AFPAR). Organized by Faculty Council, a subcommittee reviewed the prior faculty annual evaluation and developed a new report that is a one-stop shop for all faculty activities. The new, improved format allows the AFPAR to serve as an academic review for the SOM and as an annual report to the department chair.
Faculty Opportunities and Online Education
A dedicated webpage (http://medicine.hofstra.edu/faculty/faculty_opportunities.html) was developed to inform all faculty of curriculum opportunities at the SOM. This page describes available classes including the time commitment, required faculty development and contact information. This is updated and serves as an indispensable resource for faculty interested to get involved in student teaching.
The latest Faculty Council initiative is online education tailored to topics of interest from faculty. We plan on several live, interactive activities with panel discussions led by faculty. Our first event will feature a discussion of promotions with Dr. Ronald Burakoff. Stay tuned for a date and time to be announced shortly. Future events will feature discussions on mentoring faculty and academic challenges.
Mentoring Activities and Recognition
Faculty Council also continues to sponsor activities with the medical students. Our most popular events include our "Meet and Greet" evenings with the first and second year students. "Career Nights" allows the students to meet with representatives of all the medical specialties in an informal atmosphere over the course of two evenings. We also instituted the Faculty Council Recognition Award for Leadership and Service that is given at graduation each year.
Faculty Council Representatives
Be sure to know your department representative. Their mission is to relay information to their respective department and bring your ideas to the Faculty Council and to the Dean. Remember that Faculty Council is an important resource for all faculty.
This year we will be choosing new Faculty Council representatives from Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. There will also be one open at-large position. Here is your chance to get involved. We would like to thank Erik Altman, Rajiv Datta, Peter Silver, Frank Kern, Harvey Winkler, and Katherine Karlsgodt for their service to Faculty Council.
