Applying for Aid

Step 1

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the primary financial aid application for students interested in applying for federal student aid (Direct Stafford and Direct Graduate PLUS loans) and for students interested in applying for institutional aid (scholarships and the NSLIJ Health loan).

**Please note that parent information is required on the FAFSA for students who wish to be considered for institutional aid.

In order to complete the FAFSA, a student must:

  • Have a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID and password to log in
    • If you have never completed the FAFSA before, you must create a FSA ID and password on the Federal Student Aid website.
    • If you forgot your ID or password you can reset either one by going to the FSA website and clicking on the Edit My FSA ID tab.
  • Have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
  • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
  • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)

*If you are 29 or older, or if you are married, please contact the Office of Student Finance as you may not need to submit parent information.

Step 2

Submit the Supplemental Data Questionnaire (SDQ)
The Supplemental Data Questionnaire (SDQ) is required for students who wish to be considered for institutional aid. Students who wish to apply for federal student aid only do not need to submit the SDQ.

  • The SDQ link will be emailed to all students by the Office of Student Finance.

Step 3

Submit Tax Documents - Students & Parents
Please submit the following tax documents:

  • A copy of your federal tax return transcript (if you filed a federal tax return)
    • If a federal tax return was not filed, please submit copies of all W2/1099 forms.

    • If a federal tax return was not filed, please submit copies of all W2/1099 forms and submit a copy of a Verification of Non-filing Letter which provides proof that the IRS has no record of a filed tax return for that tax year.
    • Student who wish to apply for federal student aid only do not need to submit a copy of parent(s)' federal tax return transcript.
  • Please note that a federal tax return transcript is not the same as a federal tax return.
  • For more information about requesting a federal tax return transcript, please visit the IRS's Tax Transcript FAQ website.
