Print from computers and photocopiers?

Students using PC or Mac computers can print from the wireless network via PridePrint, which is accessible via the myHofstra Portal. Click here for instructions on how to setup and use PridePrint.

Students can print to the two network printers located in the Library. Our medical students are provided $120 in printing credits for the year. Color printouts are charged $0.50 each, and black & white printouts are charged $0.05 each. Scanning documents to email is free of charge.

Access computer equipment in the library?

There are 4 PC computers and 4 iMacs with hardwired connections available in the library for student and faculty use.  The entire building is on a wireless 802.11g Ethernet network and it is anticipated that most students will bring their own laptops or other devices with them to study.  For assistance in using the computers, contact our Electronic Services Coordinator.

Access library resources from off-campus?

Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine students, faculty, and staff  must login to the myHofstra portal page in order to access full text of electronic resources and library services.  If you have problems with your Hofstra username or password, please contact Hofstra University's Help Desk at 516-463-7777.  If you have problems accessing a specific electronic resource e.g. MDConsult, please contact the library at medicine.library@hofstra.edu.

Find full text journal articles?

Use the library’s Journal Finder page to determine if the library has access to particular journal titles and the years/volumes that are available.  The links on the page may indicate either a NSLIJ journal or an Axinn Library journal.  When offered a choice for the particular year needed, the NSLIJ journal link is preferred.

Search the literature for the best articles?

Our Databases can be searched by topic, author, and other specific characteristics.  For search tips and instruction on finding the best articles view our tutorial page or ask for a consultation with our Education and Liaison Librarian.  The Librarian can provide individual or group consultation or can conduct a search for you.  Other databases are featured below or are available on the library website.

Obtain materials not available in our collections?

Use the Interlibrary loan request form to request articles, books, videos, DVD’s, etc.  not accessible in the Hofstra NS-LIJ School of Medicine collection.  Requests will be processed within 24 hours during staffed hours and typically take 1-3 business days to complete.  Articles will be sent to your Hofstra email address.  Books and audiovisuals must be picked up at the School of Medicine Library during staffed hours. Scheduling a pickup time is recommended.   Books may be found at one of the NSLIJ Health System libraries or at many other libraries in the region.  For questions about Interlibrary Loan Services, please contact our Electronic Services Coordinator.

Borrow iPads for access to eBooks and iPad apps?

Students and Faculty may check out one of the five available iPad 2 devices equipped with interactive textbooks, access to our online library resources, and assorted apps. Upon checkout, you are required to sign an iPad Loan Policy form. The iPad loan period is a maximum of 72 hours. Visit our iPad Libguide for more info: http://libguides.hofstra.edu/SOM_ipad_lending. Due to the limited amount of iPads, borrowers must return the devices on time to library staff only. Late returns are subject to a late fee at $10 per day. Please do not place the device in the book return box. **iPads must be checked out or returned during staffed hours 8AM – 6PM. Read more about our library policies by visitng our Policies page.

Find electronic and print books?

Electronic textbooks are accessible from the E-Books page on the website.  Books can be browsed by general topic areas, e.g. Anatomy, or alphabetically by title.  The library subscribes to e-textbooks from multiple publishers and vendors.  The full text is always available and sometimes there is supplemental material available only online.  Individual textbooks can be searched by keyword or browsed by the table of contents or the index.  Depending on the publisher, chapters may be downloaded or small sections can be copied for individual study use.  Downloading of an entire e-book is prohibited.

Print books are physically located in our Reserve Room located behind the library front desk.  Books can be checked out and must be returned during staffed hours.  To determine if the library owns a particular title, search the online catalog by author, title, or keyword. Request that the library purchase a book or subscribe to a journal?

Use the Contact Us Form to request that the library purchase or subscribe to new materials.  Choose the option “Request for Purchase” from the dialog box on the form.  Click Submit and the request will be received by someone on the library staff who will investigate the request and respond as needed.

Return checked out items after staffed hours?

Please place checked out items to be returned in the book return box, located next to the reserve book room. Never place iPads or other electronic equiptment in the box return box. Any loaned electronic devices should be return to a library staff member. Check our About Us page for staffed hours.

Because many of the library’s journals and databases are subscription services and are not available to the general public, a special site has been created that features open-access sources for the general public. Find specific information by database?

The Library has access to many specialized databases in addition to PubMed.  Most of the databases are found on the QuickLinks on the left column of the web site.  To find more information on Evidence-Based medicine, check the Subject Guide for Evidence Based Medicine found on the library website.  A consultation with the Education and Liaison Librarian may also be beneficial.

Before attempting to access many of our databases, you must first log in through the MyHofstra Portal.
