Academic Requirements
First 100 Weeks
Year 1
- From the Person to the Professional: Challenges, Privileges, and Responsibilities (CPR) – 8 weeks
- The Biologic Imperative (BI) – 12 weeks
- Continuity and Change: Fueling the Body (FTB) – 11 weeks
- Continuity and Change: Homeostasis (HOM) – 12 weeks
- Initial Clinical Experience (ICE) I
- Acceptable academic and professional behavior and ethical standards
- Timely completion of required certifications and training
Year 2
- Interacting with the Environment (IE) – 16 weeks
- The Human Condition (HC) – 12 weeks
- Host Microbe Interaction (HMI)
- Initial Clinical Experience (ICE) II
- Completion of USMLE Step 1 (a passing score on USMLE Step 1 is required to continue in Year 3);
- Acceptable academic and professional behavior and ethical standards
- Timely completion of required certifications and training
Second 100 Weeks
Year 3 - Advanced Clinical Experience (ACE)
- Core Learning – 4 weeks
- Six (6) Core Clerkships:
- Psychiatry – 6 weeks
- Neurology – 6 weeks
- Pediatrics – 6 weeks
- Obstetrics and Gynecology – 6 weeks
- Medicine – 8 weeks
- Surgery – 6 weeks
- Continuity Clinic Clerkship – 1 half-day per week for 12 weeks
- Four (4) weeks of selectives
- Acceptable academic and professional behavior and ethical standards
- Timely completion of required certifications and training
Year 4 - Preparation for Residency
- Three (3) Core Acting Internships (AIs):
- Family Medicine, Medicine, Pediatrics, or Surgery – 4 weeks
- Emergency Medicine – 4 weeks
- Critical Care – 4 weeks
- Twenty (20) weeks of electives
- Completion of USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge and USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills
- Acceptable academic and professional behavior and ethical standards
- Timely completion of required certifications and training
- Satisfactory completion of the required academic, professional and curriculum competencies (including patient encounters and procedures) set forth by the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and/or any of its components, including the Student Advancement Committee, Curriculum Committees or other Committees and/or departments
Year 4 (For MD/PhD Students Only)
- Two (2) Core Acting Internships (AIs):
- Family Medicine, Medicine, Pediatrics, or Surgery – 4 weeks
- Emergency Medicine or Critical Care – 4 weeks
- Eight (8) weeks of electives
- Completion of USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge and USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills
- Acceptable academic and professional behavior and ethical standards
- Timely completion of required certifications and training
