Physicians Worldwide Honor the “Father of Endourology”—Dr. Arthur Smith

Dr. Arthur Smith

Renowned urologist and Northwell Health physician, Arthur D. Smith, MD, has been recognized by peers across the globe in a "Festschrift" recently published in April 2017 issue of The Journal of Endourology (J Endourol).

A Festschrift is a collection of studies, presentations, and writings all contributed in honor of a respected colleague. Dr. Smith’s festschrift is the culmination of proceedings from a meeting hosted by the Endourological Society on November 12-15, 2016, which gathered nearly 130 specialists from around the world for an extraordinary visit and tour of Kruger Park Game Preserve in South Africa—Dr. Smith’s native country.

Currently available online, the Festschrift in J Endourol begins with an overview of Dr. Smith’s professional life and contributions, including a touching tribute from his wife, Kay Smith.  It also features six Festschrift case reports in endourology, each offering a special front page designation for Dr. Smith.  The print edition of this special issue of J Endourol will be distributed at the American Urological Association (AUA) annual meeting to take place May 12-16, 2017, in Boston.

“We are fortunate to have among us a worldwide ambassador in medicine like Dr. Smith,” said Louis R. Kavoussi, MD, chair of the department urology at Northwell and Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. “He has dedicated his life to making care better for patients through innovative and uninvasive approaches to treatment.”

In practice for more than 40 years, Dr. Smith is Chairman Emeritus of the department of urology at Northwell Health and professor of urology at the School of Medicine.  An international expert in the management of kidney and ureteral stones, he developed a minimally invasive technique for removing kidney stones which has been applied to the successful treatment of thousands of patients across the globe.  He is considered the “father of endourology”—a branch of urology distinguished by procedures that are done internally, without any extensive incisions.

Dr. Smith is the recipient of many awards for his research, including the prestigious "Hugh Hampton Young Award" from the American Urological Society.  He is an honorary member of numerous international urological societies, including the British, Indian, Peruvian and Dutch societies. He is also the author of several publications, most notably, Smith’s Textbook of Endourology, a definitive specialty reference book to be circulated in its fourth edition in 2018.

In addition to his growing body of work, Dr. Smith is continually ranked among "America's Best Doctors" and "Best Doctors in New York".  He remains in active clinical practice at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, a highly respected department at Northwell named after Dr. Smith for doing what he does best—caring for patients.

“We have some unique gems in the Northwell family,” said Dr. Kavoussi, “Dr. Smith is one.”
