Family Medicine

Department of Family Medicine

Family Medicine is the medical specialty that provides continuing comprehensive healthcare for the individual and family. It is a specialty in breadth that integrates the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences. The scope of Family Medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system, and every disease entity. The Department of Family Medicine strives to improve the health of the communities it serves and is committed to providing the highest quality clinical care while educating the current and future generations of health care professionals.  The department is always seeking new advances in medicine through the conduct of bio-medical research. We strive to promote health education and care for the entire community and to administratively provide the infrastructure that allows us to deliver outstanding care. As a team, we work to ensure outstanding patient experiences along the continuum of care in the ambulatory, inpatient, and home settings.

Within the Department of Family Medicine there are eight hospitals, four community health centers, and over 400 physicians in multiple locations responsible for over 9,500 inpatient and 88,500 outpatient visits per year, spanning the pediatric to geriatric population.  The department offers five Family Medicine residency programs, which employ a total of 110 residents, at the following facilities: Glen Cove Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Southside Hospital, and Peconic Bay Medical Center. The department has also aligned with Phelps Memorial Hospital Center to enhance our ability to train family physicians who can care for our communities.

The department is staffed by a team of board-certified family medicine physicians, resident physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, behavior health psychologists, epidemiologists, registered nurses, and support staff, and we treat a widely diverse patient population and offer care for chronic conditions (such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease), ear, nose and throat care, emergency medical care, minor surgical procedures, mental and behavioral health care, pediatric care, well-woman care, reproductive counseling, and family planning services.
