Welcome to the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. We are deeply committed to promoting diversity and sustaining a climate of inclusion. We strongly believe that diversity, as a driver for excellence, will prepare students to serve the needs of an increasingly multicultural patient population and will assist in working towards attaining health equity for all sectors of the community. 
Mission
To strive to attain health equity for all through recruitment initiatives, enhanced medical curricula, and inclusive programs that aim to engender empathy and cultural awareness.
Goal
Our goal is to create an environment in which individual differences are not only respected and valued, but also celebrated by everyone.
Through our programs and curricular innovations, we take responsibility for creating an inclusive academic milieu that supports the distinctive contribution of every individual to high-quality outcomes in patient care, education, and research.

High School Pipeline Program Enters 15th Year
On July 1, 2024, The Zucker School of Medicine welcomed its fifteenth class of Medical Scholars Pipeline Program (MSPP) students. The 4-week summer program provides juniors and seniors the opportunity to discover their potential alongside the guidance of the medical school's faculty and students.
DEI in Health Care
On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, U.S. News and World Report published an op-ed authored by Jennifer Mieres, MD, associate dean of Faculty Affairs and professor of Cardiology at the Zucker School of Medicine and David Battinelli, MD, dean and Betsey Cushing Whitney Professor of Medicine, Zucker School of Medicine and executive vice president and physician-in-chief of Northwell Health. In the article, Drs. Mieres and Battinelli emphasized the critical need to address diversity, equity and inclusion in health care.
You Belong Here
The Zucker School of Medicine held its eighth annual Diversity Night on Thursday, November 9, 2023, entitled “You Belong Here: Pride and Culture.” The event, supported by the Offices of Student Affairs and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in conjunction with many of the school’s student organizations, is one of the many ways the medical school champions diversity and inclusion, core values of the school.
Top Diversity Leaders in Healthcare
On October 16, 2023, Jennifer Mieres, MD, associate dean, Faculty Affairs, and professor of Cardiology at the Zucker School of Medicine, was recognized as a Top Diversity Leader by Modern Healthcare. Dr. Mieres was honored for her extraordinary contributions to promote diversity and inclusion as foundational to advancing equity in care within the healthcare industry.
Northwell Health Scholarships
Three high school seniors who attend the Medical Scholars Pipeline Program (MSPP) at the Zucker School of Medicine are one step closer to realizing their dream careers in science and healthcare after each receiving a $2,500 scholarship from Northwell Health’s Center for Equity of Care. The awards were presented during the 53rd Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Memorial Program held virtually on January 13, 2023.
HEED Recognition
The Zucker School of Medicine received a 2022 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
Renewed Support For MSPP
The Pinkerton Foundation renewed a $50,000 grant to benefit the Zucker School of Medicine’s Medical Scholars Pipeline Program (MSPP).

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion proudly celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. September 15th – October 15th is a time to highlight the many contributions of music, food, art, and cultural expressions. Countless Hispanic and Latino Americans have served to promote inclusion, social justice, and equity for all. We acknowledge these impactful efforts to foster social change and improve our community.
(LMSA) received the Chapter of the Year
The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) received the Chapter of the Year at the 2019 LMSA Northeast Regional Conference.

Zucker SOM Launches New Pipeline Program
The mission of the Zucker Pipeline Program (ZPP), at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell (Zucker School of Medicine), is to enhance the matriculation of students underrepresented in medicine and economically disadvantaged students to the Zucker School of Medicine.
