Policy on Visiting Fourth-Year Medical Students

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance to visiting fourth-year medical students from other institutions who wish to participate in a rotation (elective or acting/sub-internship) through the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell (ZSOM) while promoting safety in the community and an equitable residency selection process.

The ZSOM endorses the Coalition for Physician Accountability Working Group’s recommendations for regulating extramural rotations to maintain safety, promote equity through the residency application process, and promote well-being.

In person rotations:

Given the rapidly changing nature of the current COVID crisis, visiting student rotations may be canceled based on current conditions in the region. These cancellations will be based on prevailing university guidelines, municipal regulations, and state mandates. A student entering the state from another may be required to quarantine for two weeks, as determined by state guidelines.
ZSOM will accept visiting students in a limited capacity and will prioritize students from schools within a 60-mile radius:

  • who have a specialty interest and do not have access to a clinical experience with a residency program in that specialty in their school’s system, or
  • for whom an away rotation is required for graduation or accreditation requirements.

A student that has completed an extramural rotation at another school for the above reasons will not be permitted to repeat that rotation at ZSOM.

Online/virtual rotations:

Visiting students from all schools may apply to participate in any online/virtual rotations offered by ZSOM through VSLO.

Procedure:

ZSOM Office of Student Records will review visiting student applications through VSLO and forward only those meeting these requirements to clinical departments for academic review.

In addition to the documentation previously expected from an applicant, those students applying for an in-person rotation will be asked to submit a Visiting Student Exemption Form in the appendix to this policy. Once the complete application meets the above qualifications, the Office for Student Records will forward the application to the appropriate clinical department for review.

Accepted visiting students may begin in-person visiting rotations at ZSOM no earlier than September 21, 2020.

Accepted visiting students may begin online/virtual visiting rotations offered through the ZSOM no earlier than June 1, 2020.
