General Information

The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research is located on the North Shore University Hospital campus in Manhasset, NY, approximately 20 minutes from Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

The School of Medicine does not accept transfer students at this time.

Due to the breadth of work and time needed to dedicate to your studies, you cannot be enrolled in another graduate/professional degree program while pursuing a PhD degree at the School of Medicine.

Application Requirements

Required application materials include:

  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended
  • MCAT or GRE scores, not older than three years at the time of application
  • TOEFL score, if appropriate, not older than three years at the time of application
  • Two letters of reference; at least one from a science professor, or supervisor of a research project
  • An essay describing your previous research experience
  • A $60 application fee

Yes, either MCAT or GRE scores are required to complete your PhD application. Individuals with an MD degree who wish to acquire a PhD should apply to the Elmezzi program at the Feinstein Institute.

Two letters of reference are required, including at least one letter from a science faculty member, or a supervisor of research projects.

Transcripts should be uploaded directly through the application system.

Letters of recommendation should be submitted through the application system by your letter writers directly. 

 

There are no prerequisite courses in the natural sciences needed to apply; however, the School of Medicine strongly recommends successful completion of the coursework outlined on our How To Apply page under “Application Requirements”. Non-traditional candidates lacking in any of the coursework listed there, but who have extraordinary post-graduate experience, especially in a scientific and/or clinical setting are encouraged to apply.

Yes, the School of Medicine will accept recommended coursework completed at a community college.

We highly value classroom interaction and; therefore, will not honor online degrees for admission to the PhD program.

Application Process

The PhD interview day takes place virtually over the Zoom platform.  The start time and other detailed information will be sent by email to applicants prior to their interview. Each applicant will interview with faculty in accordance with his/her interests. Applicants will also have the opportunity to talk with our current students.

Offers of admission will be emailed at the end of April.

How to Apply

Yes, all applicants must complete a bachelor-level degree at an accredited college or university prior to matriculation in the PhD Program.

Applicants may begin applying on September 1. A complete application must be submitted by March 1. Extensions will not be granted. The online applications can be found at https://amp.hofstra.edu/.

No, we do not give preference to in-state applicants.

Yes, international students can apply for the PhD program.
