Topic: The Emergency Department as the Gateway to the Hospital: Treating with Uncertainty
The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell proudly presents the 8th Annual Northeast Emergency Medicine Interest Group Symposium. This year’s theme is “The Emergency Department as the Gateway to the Hospital: Treating with Uncertainty”
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Lance Becker, chair of Emergency Medicine for Northwell Health, who will be speaking about the challenges faced by emergency physicians as they are tasked with managing an undifferentiated patient in the ER and the clinical skills and knowledge needed to do so.
The symposium will feature two residency panels, one by program directors and another by residents themselves, allowing attendees to gather information on several unique programs, while also getting to talk with residents to get a unique perspective into their lives, advice, and experiences. We will be featuring several local programs as well as a few programs from across the country. Following the residency panels, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in several interactive stations run by renowned EM attendings and residents including simulations, clinical decision making, imaging games, and a suturing workshop.

Interactive Station Descriptions
Suture Clinic: This station will be approximately 30 minutes and be facilitated by Northwell emergency medicine residents. Residents will direct participants on proper suture techniques and provide individualized feedback to participants within the group. Questions are welcomed and encouraged.
Simulation Station: This station will be approximately 30 minutes and will be facilitated by Northwell simulation fellows. In small groups, participants will be run through a custom-made simulation on a scenario that residents commonly come across in the ED.
Imaging Station: This station will be approximately 30 minutes and be facilitated by Northwell emergency medicine residents. In small groups, participants will be participating in a game-like approach to interpreting various imaging modalities such as x-ray and ultrasound.
Clinical Reasoning Station: This station will be approximately 30 minutes and be facilitated by medical students at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. In this station, participants will be broken into small groups. Participants will be directing the care of a patient, and every choice made will either progress the case (if it is the correct choice) or return the group to the beginning (if it is an incorrect choice). The objective of the station is to complete the case while reflecting on choices that may not have been the most appropriate.

Dr. Lance Becker joined Northwell Health in 2015 and currently serves as the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine for North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, chair of Emergency Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and as an investigator at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. Dr. Becker received his M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine before pursuing his residency in Internal Medicine at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center. Throughout his career, Dr. Becker has established himself as an exceptional clinician and renowned expert in the areas of emergency medicine, critical care, and as leader in the field of resuscitation. His clinical experience and knowledge on the biomedical sciences behind cell death have led to the publication of hundreds of research initiatives that have paved the way for how we approach resuscitation efforts, significantly decreasing mortality and morbidity statistics. Under his supervision, training residents and medical students continue to receive unparalleled education preparing them for the uncertainties that can enter the Emergency Department at any point in time. For his efforts, he has been the recipient of several clinical, research and teaching awards and received notable recognition by a myriad of professional organizations including the American Heart Association, American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Society of Critical Care.
