Meaning in Medicine Workshops
Meaning in Medicine workshops designed for SOM faculty and healthcare professionals. Held at NSLIJ Centers for Learning and Innovation (CLI), 1979 Marcus Avenue, Suite 101, Lake Success. The Healer's Art, Fall 2014

Two successful programs have been run to date:

Spring 2015: MS1 Students (20 Students)

The SOM welcomed pediatrician, musician and author of Scales to Scalpels, Doctors who practice the Healing Arts of Music and Medicine on October 6, 2014
Osler Book & Film Series
All programs to be held at 6:00p.m. at the MET (SOM, 2nd Floor), and will include dinner. Participants (students and faculty) are asked to view the films or read the books prior to the discussion. When films are involved, showings will take place at 4p.m. prior to each event.
November 13, 2014, 6:00p.m., the MET (SOM): Dr. Barbara Hirsch moderated a discussion of "the clinician as patient" based on the film: The Doctor, starring William Hurt or book "A Taste of My Own Medicine," (1988) by Edward Rosenbaum (which the film is based upon)
February 11, 2015: Dr. Ron Israeli moderated a discussion about the book Cutting for Stone (Dr. Abraham Varghese)
March 31, 2015: Dr. Sanjeev Suratwala moderated a discussion about the book/film A Fault in Our Stars (by John Greene)
April 15: My Left Foot – Dr. Martin Edelstein, Dr. Tochi Iroku to moderate – postponed to Fall, 2015 due to scheduling conflicts
The Wisdom of Wit – An Evening of Theater
Acclaimed actress Megan Cole performed a dramatized lecture version of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize winning play "Wit" for which Ms. Cole played the leading role in the original production. A Celebration of Visual Art.The Osler Society hosted an Art Exhibit featuring original artwork created by Faculty, Students and Staff of the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, the North Shore-LIJ Health System and Hofstra University. The Art Exhibit, Reception & Award Ceremony was held at the School of Medicine on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, 6:00 p.m.- 8:00p.m., and the works will remain on display for several weeks.

Narrateur, Issue 4, Spring 2015 Call for Submissions (Submissions Deadline: February 1, 2015).
Launch Event, Narrateur, Reflections on Caring, Issue Four (2015) Featuring speaker Dr. Sandeep Jauhar: May 26, 2015 at the School of Medicine, reception featuring music, artwork and food to begin at 5:00p.m., followed by Guest Speaker, Dr. Sandeep Jauhar, a NSLIJ cardiologist, and author of Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician (2014) and Intern: A Doctor's Initiation (2009) Following Dr. Jauhar's presentation, various contributors to Narrateur, Reflections on Caring, will share their literary works.
The Osler Society Medicine in Theater Group was formed at the request/suggestion of several students in 2015. A planning meeting was held with Students and faculty volunteer Dr. Burt Rochelson on March 4, 2015, and a call went out to students and faculty to attend the first meeting, which was held on March 24. Approximately 20 individuals attended, comprised on students, faculty, nurses, NSLIJ staff. A decision was collectively made to have students lead and direct the group under the advisement of Dr. Burt Rochelson and Lisa Martin. The next meeting is planned for March 19, 2015 at 7:00pm at SOM.
