Submission Guidelines

Narrateur: Reflections on Caring seeks unpublished, high-quality work that reflects the experiences in the practice of medicine and the learning that takes place along the road to taking care of patients. Themes should include health, illness, caring and expressions of the human condition. The submissions are not intended to contain opinion or advocacy editorials.

  • Narrateur accepts only unpublished material, which means that your submission may not be published in print or online prior to it appearing in Narrateur. If your piece is accepted, you are free to publish or post your work elsewhere after it appears in Narrateur (Spring release).
  • Prose should be limited to 3,000 words.
  • Poetry should not exceed 2-manuscript pages. No more than three poems per submission.
  • Photographs should be submitted in digital format in at least 300 dpi resolution (JPEG) at 100 percent or greater for publication. The picture should be no smaller than 6 x 6 inches. No more than three photographs per submission.
  • Art should be photographed in the same format as above. No more than three pieces per submission.
  • Submissions are open to students, faculty and employees of Northwell Health, Zucker School of Medicine and Hofstra University.
  • While your submissions are being reviewed, please let us know if your work was accepted elsewhere.
  • All submissions should be double-spaced. Please submit your manuscript, photographs or art through narrateur.submishmash.com/submit
  • Submitting is free. There is no payment to submitters for published work. All contributors will receive two copies of the journal upon email request to SOMOsler@hofstra.edu

Each submission will be reviewed by a member of the Narrateur editorial board. Individuals who submit prose, poetry, photographs or art will be notified of acceptance or rejection by email. Editorial suggestions prior to acceptance should be responded to within a week of the email notification.
