EDUCATION

MD/MA IN CLINICAL BIOETHICS

This program gives medical students the tools to lead — in hospital ethics committees, legal and policy discussions, and patient advocacy. Built on case-based learning and real clinical experience, the MD/MA in Clinical Bioethics prepares physicians to engage with the ethical questions that define modern medicine.

From the Classroom to the Clinic

The MD/MA curriculum covers today’s most pressing issues in bioethics through case-based learning and hands-on clinical experience. Graduates go on to careers in bioethics, health policy, law, and medicine.

Students who have completed the Certificate in Clinical Bioethics receive 6 credits toward the MA.

The MD/MA program is open to all students enrolled at Zucker School of Medicine, including those in the 4+4 BS-BA/MD program. Students are encouraged to formally enter the program after completing year 3 of the MD program, though participation in the Certificate in Clinical Bioethics is available as early as year 2. The program is designed so that students earn both degrees within a five-year timeframe.

Eligibility and Cost

The MD/MA program is open to all Zucker School of Medicine students in good academic standing. Accepted students take a leave of absence from the MD program to complete their MA coursework over one year. Plans of study vary depending on whether a student has completed the Certificate or selective in Clinical Bioethics.

The Certificate in Clinical Bioethics is offered at no cost to ZSOM students. Tuition and graduate fees for the MA portion are evaluated annually, are subject to change, and are separate from standard MD program costs.
