Curriculum Committee

  1. Purpose As detailed in the Faculty Bylaws, the Curriculum Committee (CC), a standing committee of the faculty, is the governing body responsible for overseeing the design, management, integration, evaluation, enhancement and continuous improvement of a coherent and coordinated medical school curriculum. The committee ensures that the curriculum meets the requirements set forth by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), aligns with institutional goals and policies, and best prepares students for GME.

  2. Authority and Responsibility The CC is charged with working collaboratively with medical education leadership to ensure that the curriculum enables students to achieve the competencies required for medical education. This includes but is not limited to defining program and learning objectives, overseeing curricular content, and monitoring the effectiveness of teaching, assessment, and student performance.

  3. Functions The CC is responsible for:
    1. Curriculum Design and Oversight: Monitoring the development and ongoing evaluation of program objectives to ensure they are outcome-based and align with the competencies required for medical education. This includes horizontal and vertical integration, logical content sequencing and mapping and whole program review.

    2. Evaluation and Continuous Improvement: Overseeing the evaluation of courses, clerkships, and teaching methods, to ensure alignment with institutional goals. This includes ensuring the integration of learning objectives, identifying gaps or redundancies, and guiding regular curriculum reviews in response to evolving medical education standards.

    3. Compliance: Providing oversight to ensure alignment with LCME standards and institutional requirements, including the coordination and establishment of subcommittees as needed.

  4. Membership The CC comprises faculty, administrative leaders, and student representatives. Membership is designed to reflect diverse expertise and perspectives. Faculty members are appointed based on their knowledge and experience in medical education, while student members are elected to provide a learner’s perspective. Specific membership details are outlined in Curriculum Committee Procedures.

  5. Subcommittees The CC may establish subcommittees to focus on specific aspects of the curriculum, including academic phases, integration of pre-clinical and clinical experiences, program evaluation, assessment methods, and learning environment. The subcommittees report up to the Executive Committee and can form workgroups as needed. Specific subcommittee details are outlined in Curriculum Committee Procedures.

  6. Reporting and Accountability The CC is responsible for regularly updating the Vice Dean and Dean for Education, and collaborates with leadership of accreditation and compliance. Annual reports are submitted detailing curricular changes, evaluation outcomes, and compliance with LCME standards.

  7. Revision of the Policy This policy will be reviewed and updated every three years or as required to remain aligned with LCME standards and institutional goals.
