MS1 Summer Research

The Student Medical Research Program at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell provides students who have completed year one, transitioning into year two of medical school,  with an opportunity to conduct clinical, basic science or translational research at either Northwell Health, Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. It runs from June to August and culminates in Medical Student Research Day, an event that highlights student research projects.

In-House Research

A mentor for in-house research is deemed as any physician or researcher appointed within Northwell Health, Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

  1. Prior to Final Application DEADLINE: the first week of March. Search Research Opportunities for available research projects.
  2. Found a project of interest?   Fill out the Research Interest Form with the name(s) of a mentor with whom you are interested in working with and an updated resume/CV. You can select up to three mentors, even if each of the mentors has multiple available projects. The OMSR will email the mentor(s) that you selected on your behalf. You will have the opportunity to select additional mentors if their projects have already been taken by another student.   3. Upon approval or selection for a project, along with project mentor, fill out MS 1 Summer Research Application (due first week of March)
  4. You will be notified via email from Student Affairs of receipt of application and stipend specifics no later than APRIL 1.
  5. It is the student's responsibility to utilize the link sent to complete training and verify systems access is functioning prior to the start of their summer research term. Please check with your mentor to verify all needed training /access has been requested.
  6. Disbursement of monies via check processed through the Office of Student Finance will not be administered to the student until Summer Research Mentee Expectation Form is completed.

Outside Research

A mentor for outside research is deemed as any physician or researcher NOT affiliated or appointed within Northwell Health, Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

  1. Have you gained acceptance to an outside mentor research project?
  2. Congratulations! Let us know about it. Email us at medicine.omsr@hofstra.edu
  3. Students participating in projects deemed as "outside mentor research" do not qualify to receive summer stipend monies.
  4. No additional paperwork is needed on our end.  Students are invited and strongly encouraged to present research findings on Scholarship Day.
