MS1 Summer Research

The Medical Student Summer Research Program provides students who have completed year one, transitioning into year two of medical school,  with an opportunity to conduct clinical, basic science or translational research at either Hofstra University, Northwell Health, Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. The summer term runs from June to August and concludes with academic presentations and posters known as  Medical Student Research Day.

In-House Research (Stipend Qualifying)

Any physician or researcher appointed within Hofstra University, Northwell Health, Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is deemed a mentor for in-house research.

  1. Before the application deadline: the first week of March. Search : 2025-26 Research Opportunities Google Doc for available project positions.

    Found a project of interest?   Fill out the Research Interest Form with the name(s) of a mentor with whom you are interested in working with and an updated resume/CV. You may select up to three mentors, includes mentors with multiple project listings (submit one form for each desired project). The OMSR will email the mentor(s) that you selected on your behalf. You will have the chance to select additional mentors if you do not secure placement within the first application cycle. Students in Research

  2. Once you are officially selected to participate in a project, the student, and project mentor, will be sent a confirmation email that includes a link to fill out  MS 1 Summer Research Application (due first week of March)
  3. Students will be notified via email from the Office of Medical Student Research regarding receipt of completed applications and general guidelines.
  4. It is the student's responsibility to utilize information and links sent to complete training and verify that system access is functioning before the start of their summer research term. Please check with your mentor to ensure all prerequisites are in place.
  5. Disbursement of monies via check processed through the Office of Student Finance will not be administered to the student until Summer Research Mentee Expectation Form is completed.

External Research

An external mentor for outside research is deemed as any physician or researcher NOT affiliated or appointed within Hofstra University, Northwell Health, Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Students are solely responsible for securing External Research Opportunities.

Participating in an external research project? Congratulations!

  1. Please follow all guidelines and deadlines stipulated by the sponsoring agency. Students are invited and strongly encouraged to present external research findings on Medical Student Research Day.
  2. Students participating in external research do not qualify to receive Northwell-funded stipends.
