Policy on Grading for the Acting Internships in the Second 100 Weeks

Please note: In April of 2020, in response to the directive of Governor Cuomo to graduate final-year medical students as soon as possible, the grading scale and grading elements required to complete acting internships in the Second 100 Weeks were adjusted. The resultant policy is listed below and applies to the Class of 2020 only. This policy was approved by the Curriculum Committee, the Faculty Council, and the Dean, and is in full compliance with LCME accreditation standards.

Policy on Grading for the Acting Internships in the Second 100 Weeks for the Class of 2020

Under normal circumstances, students earn a final grade of Honors, High Pass, Pass or Fail or a temporary designation of Conditional Pass in each of the three required acting internships (“courses”) and any elective acting internships after the completion of the four-week block.

Due to the unusual nature of the learning environment during the COVID-19 emergency in New York State, a limited number of students will earn a final grade of Pass or Fail or a temporary designation of Conditional Pass after the completion of the acting internship experience. This exception applies to students who receive an acting internship grade after April 3, 2020.

There are three grading elements in each course, as described below.

Grading Elements:

Each grading element, with the exception of the Professionalism and Administrative Assessment described below, is assigned a grade of Honors, High Pass, Pass, or Fail.

  1. Clinical Assessment of Student or Non-Clinical Assessment of Student
  2. Multi-source Assessment of Student, as applicable
  3. Professionalism and Administrative Assessment

The Professionalism and Administrative Assessment includes:

  1. Attendance
  2. Timely completion of assignments, logs, and evaluations
  3. Professional etiquette in all forms of communication

Grading of the Professionalism and Administrative Assessment is assigned a designation of Meets Expectations, Meets Expectations with Recommendations, or Does Not Meet Expectations. Receipt of Does Not Meet Expectations on this assessment may lower the final course grade. Receipt of Meets Expectations with Recommendations and/or Does Not Meet Expectations on this assessment in multiple courses may result in a notation in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).

Final Grade: Honors, High Pass, or Pass

A final grade of Honors, High Pass, or Pass is determined by standards pre-specified by the standard setting committee for students who receive a final grade on or before April 3, 2020.

Final Grade: Pass

A final grade of Pass is determined by standards pre-specified by the standard setting committee for students who receive a final grade after April 3, 2020.

Temporary Designation: Conditional Pass (only applicable in first attempt of a course)

If a student earns a grade of Fail on one or more grading element(s) in the course but the student does not meet criteria to fail the course, as set by the standard setting committee, the student will earn a temporary designation of Conditional Pass and will be required to reassess the grading elements that did not meet the passing standard to be eligible for graduation. For more information on reassessment requirements and procedures, please refer to the Policy on Reassessment.

Final Grade: Fail (Required AIs)

In the first attempt of a course, if a student earns a grade of Fail on one or more grading element(s) in the course and the student meets criteria to fail the course, the student will earn a final course grade of Fail and will be required to remediate (repeat and pass) the course to be eligible for graduation. The opportunity to remediate will be subject to the decision of the Student Advancement Committee. In the second attempt of a course, if a student earns a grade of Fail on one or more grading elements, the student will earn a final course grade of Fail and the school’s expectation is that the student will be dismissed from the MD program, pending the Student Advancement Committee’s recommendation.

Final Grade: Fail (Elective AIs)

If a student earns a final grade of Fail, the student will not earn credit towards graduation requirements.

Grading of the Professionalism Assessment is assigned a designation of Meets ExpectationsMeets Expectations with Recommendations, or Does Not Meet Expectations. Receipt of Does Not Meet Expectations on this assessment may lower the final course grade.

If the student earns a Meets Expectations with Recommendations or Does Not Meet Expectations on the Professionalism Assessment in more than one course, it can affect the student's eligibility for conference funding, the AOA/Gold Honor Societies, and/or result in a notation in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).
