Clinical Assessment of Student

  • How are grades in “Clinical Assessment of Student” determined?

Students can earn a grade of Honors, High Pass, Pass or Fail in clinical assessment of students.

The school collects forms from a variety of individuals with whom you work during your rotations. The assignment of faculty or residents as graders is either made by the student, the school or a combination. At the end of a rotation, the Office of Assessment and Evaluation analyzes the data based on the forms available by the due date provided the minimum number of forms (specific to each clerkship) has been received. Preset standards are applied defined by the % of 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s which varies by clerkship. Consideration for a grade of fail is applied to students who earn a score of 1 on any form or 2s on more than one form.

  • I’m worried that the person who graded me is a “harsh” grader. Is there a process in place for identifying grading patterns of faculty?

The Office of Assessment and Evaluation reviews the performance of all faculty members responsible for grading. Feedback is given and adjustments are made accordingly.

  • Who can I speak to if I have questions about my performance?

Reach out to the ACE Director or your direct supervisors to discuss your performance. Dr. Pearlman and one of the ACE Co-Directors, Drs. Pawelczak and Dougherty have designated office hours available for you to discuss questions you have about grades. In order to make an appointment, please sign up via the sign-up genius distributed by Thomas Schoenthaler.

  • How can I improve my performance?

Begin by reviewing the forms submitted by your supervisors, including both checklist items as well as comments. Reflect on what you might do differently in subsequent rotations. Looking ahead, make sure you are aware of the questions that will be asked about your by your supervisors and ask for feedback proactively.
