Mentoring and Professionalism in Training (MAP-IT)

Northwell Health Office of Academic Affairs supports professional development programs for interprofessional team members in their career journeys. Our long-running signature program, MAP-IT 1.0, is run in two tracks: Clinical and Corporate. Clinical is designed for those team members who are patient-facing and/or work in clinical settings, while Corporate is for non-patient facing team members, including TPAs/TPMs. As an interprofessional program, MAP-IT creates a shared learning experience rooted in humanism, professionalism, and compassionate care. Through monthly 90-minute virtual small-group sessions led by expert facilitators, participants engage in meaningful peer interaction, reflective discussion, and skill-building across a 10-month curriculum. The program is intentionally designed to be interprofessional, creating communities of practice that reflect the collaborative nature of the Northwell health system.

What sets MAP-IT apart is its facilitation model and small group format. Participants consistently identify these elements, along with the quality of peer interaction, as the primary reasons they remain engaged throughout the program. Sessions provide a psychologically safe space where participants can explore topics directly applicable to their work, including compassion and humanism, interprofessional collaboration, communication and feedback, psychological safety, self-awareness and reflection, leadership development, and personal and professional growth.
Upon completing the program, participants are equipped not only with new knowledge and skills but also with the confidence and competence to return as group facilitators, extending the reach and impact of the program across the health system.

MAP-IT discussion modules include:

As a longitudinal program, MAP-IT provides participants with a unique opportunity to engage in reflective learning and professional development over the course of an academic year. The experience includes a graduation ceremony that celebrates the

accomplishments of each cohort and one that highlights the program’s profound impact on its participants and reinforces Northwell’s commitment to developing compassionate, humanistic leaders across the organization.

Complementing this, MAP-IT 1.5 is a 6-month character development program that guides participants through a journey of self-discovery and growth, focusing on building empathy and compassion, communicating with character, leading with integrity, and sustaining excellence through practical wisdom. Together, these two programs work hand-in-hand to develop team members who not only possess the skills to lead effectively but also have the strong character and self-awareness to do so with purpose and integrity. Together, these

two programs complement each other beautifully — 1.0 builds the skills, while 1.5 builds the character behind those skills.

To date, MAP-IT 1.0 and 1.5 graduates number in the thousands, spanning the regions that comprise the Northwell Health system.
