Attendance Policy for the First 100 Weeks
Overview and Philosophy
Zucker School of Medicine expects attendance, punctual arrival, and participation in all educational activities. Attendance and participation are necessary components of our interactive curriculum and, therefore, are considered professional responsibilities. Attendance is assessed in all small group and clinical skills activities.
The Zucker School of Medicine prioritizes the health and well-being of the students and accommodates their health care needs and concerns. The Zucker School of Medicine encourages students, whenever possible, not to schedule a routine health-related activity during curricular time, but recognizes and is comfortable with making exceptions when necessary. A student is excused from class or a clinical activity at any time for an emergent health care need.
Failure to meet expectations of the school's attendance policy is considered a breach of professional responsibilities as described in the School's Statement of Professionalism and Technical Standards.
Procedure
The procedure for reporting absences and consequences of excessive absences are detailed here.
Any absences must be reported via email to the Office of Student Affairs in advance of the start of the scheduled activity to medicine.students@hofstra.edu. Students are responsible for the content of any missed sessions. All missed clinical activities must be made up.
Students who either fail to report absences or have two (2) absences in a single course or have three (3) absences in one academic year must meet with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to discuss the School's expectations of attendance and punctuality.
If a student has 4 to 5 absences in an academic year, he or she may become ineligible for summer research stipends, lose his or her lottery position for selection of Advanced Clinical Experience (ACE) core rotations and acting internships, and become ineligible for financial support for medical student academic meetings. If a student has 6 or more absences in an academic year, the matter is brought to the Student Advancement Committee.
